Course Overview & Objectives
This course focuses on one of the Four Gentleman Plants—bamboo. The Four Gentleman Plants (plum blossoms, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum) are deeply rooted in Eastern culture, symbolizing noble virtues. Among them, bamboo holds a particularly special place in people’s hearts. In traditional Chinese art, bamboo is even regarded as a standalone subject, highlighting its artistic and cultural significance.
In this course, we will explore both the artistic and cultural aspects of bamboo painting. Additionally, we will introduce the sparrow, a lively and expressive bird often paired with bamboo in classical compositions. After a brief theoretical breakdown of both subjects, we will dive straight into the world of brush painting, bringing them to life on paper.
By the end of the course, you will have completed two full paintings, featuring these essential subjects in harmony.
Materials Needed
The painting of bamboo and sparrows requires only a few simple supplies:
- Brushes – Large, medium, and small
- Xuan rice paper – Raw or semi-raw type
- Ink
- A few colors – Mainly brown
