About Course

Course Introduction

In this course, we’ll explore the gentle beauty and rich symbolism of two beloved subjects in Chinese art: the peach, a timeless symbol of longevity, and the paradise flycatcher, a bird of elegance and auspicious meaning.

You’ll learn to paint these subjects in the expressive style of Chinese freehand brushwork, also known as xieyi (寫意), where spirit comes before detail, and each stroke flows with feeling.

This course is not just about painting—it’s also about slowing down, connecting with traditional culture, and finding peace in the rhythm of brush and ink. Whether you’re just starting out or returning to painting, you are warmly welcome here.

Let’s begin this creative journey together—with curiosity, calm, and joy.

The Symbolic Heart of Longevity in Chinese Art
In Module 2, we’ll step into the cultural heart of our subject. We’ll explore the many symbols of longevity in Chinese art, from ancient legends to temple figures, and look closely at how peaches and paradise flycatchers carry wishes for a long and harmonious life. I’ll also introduce a few important artists known for painting these themes.

Peach & Bird – From Simplicity to Spirit
In Module 3, we’ll begin painting. First, we’ll study the form and rhythm of the peach—its round fruit, flowing leaves, and natural composition. Then, we’ll move on to the more intricate paradise flycatcher: its body structure, signature tail, and expressive posture. I’ll guide you step-by-step with demonstrations to build confidence before we enter our full compositions.

Painting Compositions
In Module 4, we’ll bring everything together. You’ll paint three complete scenes: The first is called The Painting of Longevity, where a single bird perches on a fruitful branch. The second, Abundant Fruit, features a peaceful pair of birds among ripe peaches. And the third, Double Longevity, shows one bird in flight and the other waiting below—two spirits in harmony beneath a peach-laden branch.

Course Conclusion
In Module 5, we’ll reflect. I’ll share tips for mounting or displaying your artwork at home, and offer thoughts on how to continue growing your practice—through observation, sketching, patience, and above all, enjoyment.
