Course Content

Course Introduction & Material
We begin with an overview of xieyi (写意), or freehand painting—what it is, where it comes from, and why it's different from detailed gongbi work. You'll also become familiar with the essential tools of the art: brushes, ink, pigments, paper, and other materials.

Symbolism of Longevity Painting
Here, we dive into the cultural heart of our subject. You’ll learn how symbolism functions in Oriental painting, and why cranes and pine trees are powerful symbols of longevity, virtue, and spiritual strength. We’ll also explore the historical development of longevity painting and meet several notable artists who helped define this genre.

Painting Techniques
This module lays the foundation for your painting practice. We’ll study the forms and movements of cranes—learning how to paint their heads, wings, and elegant postures—and explore the structure and texture of pine trees, including their branches, bark, and needles.

Painting Compositions
Now we bring everything together in two complete compositions: - Crying to the Dawn – a single crane calling upward beneath the rising sun - Quiet Observation – two cranes under a pine tree, attuned to something unseen Each piece gives you the opportunity to apply what you've learned in your own expressive style.

Final Thoughts & Creative Expansion
You’ll receive tips for mounting or displaying your artwork and reflections on painting not just as a technique, but as a meditative and meaningful practice.
